The Details on the Lake Cottage Bedroom

The Project

This lake house bedroom needed a full fledged cosmetic update as it felt rather juvenile for its now adult inhabitant. The bedroom was last designed for the client when she was in her early teens in the 2000s, so the room needed to grow up, just as she had. The room itself has excellent bones, such as the beadboard, the window seat looking out onto the lake and some excellent vintage pieces, so I came in and gave the room a much needed glow up.

The Inspo

There were two tenets to my design inspiration for this project: the lake itself and the immaculate Eli Lilly estates located down the road. In any project, I always consider the environment surrounding the home, and there is no better inspiration than a body of water. Additionally, the Eli Lilly estates are some of the last original cottages standing on this lake as the rest of the shoreline fills up with McMansion after McMansion. I wanted to capture and bring back some of that old world cottage charm.

The Client

The client is bold, fun-loving and unafraid of color and pattern. She wanted the room to feel grown up but not stuffy; nautical but not over the top; cottage-y yet still refined. Her vision was to have an inspiring, peaceful respite from her busy life in Chicago. This room represents an escape to a slower, more peaceful pace of life, with a nod to the history of the lake’s original cottages. This is an incredibly special place for the client, as she grew up here and has some of her fondest memories here.
